Famous Congratulations: Peter Cherukuri
He’s putting his suit aside to perform in the Picnic Theatre Company’s one-hour interpretation of the film, and anyone interested in classic movies (and drinking wine outside), should head to Dumbarton House this week for a great show. He’ll be playing the role of Sam the Piano Player, a nightclub performer most known for his ballad “As Time Goes By,” the love song of main characters Rick and Ilsa.
The Picnic Theatre Company, founded in 2010, is entirely volunteer-run and puts on “site-specific party theatre” around the District. They are known for shortening classic movies like The 39 Steps and Arsenic & Old Lace into short, one-act plays. All of their performances are hosted picnic-style, and they invite viewers to bring a blanket and relax on the grass.
Cherukuri will perform on June 15, 16, and 17 at the Dumbarton House at 7 p.m. and on June 23 at the Phillips Collection at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12, and all proceeds will go to preservation and education efforts at the Dumbarton House and Courage for Kids.
Break a leg, Peter! Hypothetically, at least.
