Shanthi, the Asian Elephant at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, will be leaving us with some VERY big shoes to fill- a size 20 to be exact. That’s right, shoes aren’t just for humans and yap yap dogs anymore, elephants get to go shoe shopping now too (so the jokes on you, elephant husbands).

While we try to tell ourselves and our bank accounts that all the shoes we buy are practical, Shanthi’s latest kicks truly are. These enormous shoes were made and donated by Teva to help with the 41-year-old elephant’s arthritis in her two front wrists. But I mean, you’re feet would probably have some issues too if they bared 9,000 lbs everyday for 41 years.

Tony Barthel, Elephant Trails curator, tells FamousDC that “the benefit of these boots designed by Teva is their versatility. They protect her healing feet in much the same way humans wear bandages, and they allow her to move freely throughout the exhibit.”

Veterinarians at the National Zoo tried a number of different treatments before even considering buying Shanthi her first pair of shoes. Some of these treatments included daily pedicures and medicated foot baths- damn, the life of an elephant keeps looking better and better.
