We’re just about halfway through summer and DC has come alive again! If you’re on a budget, or just plain broke like most of us, we’ve got your Friday night plans covered with free activities ranging from outdoor concerts to movies with exceptional city vista backdrops. There’s nothing better than grabbing a picnic blanket and lawn chair to head out for an evening of fun after a long ass week.

The latest season of the Jazz in the Garden concert series kicked off back in May. The free series features an eclectic mix of jazz performed by top Washington-area artists, and pitchers of your favorite drinks (aka sangria) can be purchased at the on-site Pavilion.

Time: 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (7th Street and Constitution Avenue)

Capitol Riverfront BID is well into its sixth season of the annual Friday Night Concert Series, which spotlights homegrown DC bands ranging in genre from reggae to 80s. Great selections of brews and bites are available for purchase. Soak in the beautiful river view after a long week at the office, you deserve it!

Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Location: The Yards Park (355 Water Street, SE)

Meet your friends at the Marine Barracks on a Friday night for the complimentary Evening Parade performance- a community favorite! The event features “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, “The Commandant’s Own” The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, the Marine Corps Color Guard, the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, Ceremonial Marchers, and LCpl. Chesty XIII, the official mascot of Marine Barracks.

Time: 8:45 pm – 10:00 pm

Location: Marine Barracks (8th and I Streets, SE)

Union Market Drive-In Movies

Go old-school this Friday with plans to go to DC’s very own drive-in movie theater at Union Market. The popular venue, coupled with artisanal food available for purchase, makes every summer Friday great again. Screenings are free for walk-ins and cyclists who may sit in the front picnic area, and parking is $10 per vehicle. The DC Rollergirls will be skating your snacks to you, as they have in years past.

Time: Parking Lot opens at 6:30 pm. Gates close at 8:30 pm. Movies begin at 9:00 pm, or sunset.

Location: Union Market Parking Lot (1305 5th Street NE)
