When music director Erich Leinsdorf heard the news about Kennedy before a concert, he asked the orchestra’s librarian to sprint to get the sheet music parts for Beethoven’s funeral march. There was much gasping when Leinsdorf announced the news, but the crowd then listened to the orchestra play the funeral march in complete silence.
