Memorial Day weekend is upon us and we all know what this means – pools across town will be opening up! All kidding aside, it’s also the weekend we honor our veterans’ service and sacrifice. For those of you staying in town, I’ve got one heck of a weekend lineup for you. And, for those of you heading to one of the nearby beaches or elsewhere, we’ll miss ya, sorta.

Thursday

Artomatic – this annual spring festival kicks off this weekend (ending June 23rd) and one of tonight’s events immediately caught my eye. Yes, it has to do with wine, but in all honesty, the Washington Wine Academy knows their stuff, so drop by this FREE tasting from 6-7pm.

Art After Dark: Apocalypse – I love the title of this event at the Art Museum of the Americas and the flyer looks pretty swanky. No tickets will be sold at the door so buy them now! $40, 8pm-12am.

Friday

The Pig – when I first heard about this place, I was immediately stoked. Hailing from the pork state – NC – anything swine is fine with me. Check it out for dinner with friends and report back what you think. Heck, you may find me there. And, for you VA folk, the Green Pig Bistro is supposed to be amazing as well so your hog needs are covered in any zip code.

Miguel Migs – this San Fran DJ has graced DC with his presence on numerous occasions and always shows us a good time. Catch him at U Street Music Hall with songstress Lisa Shaw. $10.

Saturday

Pietasters – who knew there were ska godfathers? Well, apparently, these guys are gold when it comes to their genre and they will be headlining a punk show at The Rock and Roll Hotel to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Spitfires United, the Unabombers, the Screws and the Incited will also be on hand, as will raffles for tattoo shops and bar tabs. Sounds like a Memorial Day weekend winner to me.

Zou Bisou Bisou – I also enjoy reading the Brightest Young Things’ blog so I’m eager to check out their party at the French Embassy’s La Maison Francaise where for $20 in advance ($25 at the door), you’ll get a full slate of DJs, including my buddy Adrian Loving, a variety show that includes comedy, burlesque and a ukulele, and live music in the garden.

Sunday

Adult Swim – since Monday is a holiday, why not make the most of your Sunday by starting out at this pool party at the Capitol Skyline Hotel. Music provided by my buddy DJ Moh Ducis. 12-6pm.

Memorial Day Soiree at Rivers Watergate – my buddy DJ Boris Gluck is throwing this soiree which features BBQ on the patios and drinks specials. Be sure to RSVP, 3pm.

Nikka Costa – this fiery songstress will be performing at The Hamilton, and as someone who’s seen her before, you won’t want to miss her. She’s one dynamic, sexy singer.

Afrika Bambaataa – known as the Godfather of Hip Hop and in the fourth decade of his career, Bambaataa’s selections run the gamut of tempos and styles, and he always provides one heck of a dance party. Catch him at the Funk 4 Peace show at U Street Music Hall with All Good Funk Alliance, Fort Knox Five and Nappy Riddem.

Monday

Memorial Day – there are countless options for fun on this special day including the National Memorial Day Parade, the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally and events at all the monuments. Check out this link that provides details on each and more.

Tuesday

Steve Winwood – I can already hear the song Valerie blazing out of Wolf Trap during this singer’s performance. You know you love him  – go check him out.
